ACTIVE SENIORS

To help seniors stay active, activity centers around Denmark offer a range of activities targeted at seniors as a way for them to get out of their homes and stay active while making new acquaintances. Peder Lykke Centret on Amager, Copenhagen provides such an activity center for seniors above the age of 65.

In the project, I have together with my group looked at Peder Lykke Centret as a single, existing service, with the goal of presenting different concepts that could help improve it.

Based on interviews and observation with staff and visitors we proposed three concepts:

Concept 1: Monthly member portrait

  • Every month a single senior’s qualities, interests and personal way of using PLC is portrayed in the PLC newspaper and on the info screen in the common area.

Concept 2: Open activity

  • Every month an activity is organized by a senior in collaboration with a teacher. This creates an opportunity for sharing knowledge and experiences between the seniors.

Concept 3: Suggestion box

  • Anonymous suggestions collected in a box give voice to users who otherwise can’t or won’t speak up. The suggestions create a shared topic of conversation, both in general and for the next house meeting.

SKILLS OBTAINED

  • Fieldwork: To better understand the elderly life at the activity center, interviews, observations and focus groups were done - both with the elderly and the staff.

  • Blueprint & Service ecology: To reflect on what was actually at stake at PLC we used both a service blueprint and mapped out a service ecology to understand the full service (pictures on the right).
